Metope (?). Early Xth century, Khu'o'ng My style. Sandstone. H. 45.9 cm, W 48.3 cm, D. 14.6 cm. Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Loan from The Christensen Fund, BL 78S2.
This architectural fragment represents a fierce looking male figure flying while brandishing a sword. The bulging eyes, the protruding teeth and the frightening weapon depict a menacing warrior. The drapery of the garment with the shoulder cloth fluttering in the wind as he flies, places this figure in the early Xth century Khu'o'ng My style (Boisselier 1963 a : Fig. 78).
